EndNote: Installing EndNote for Windows

Guide to installing and using EndNote for students, researchers, faculty, and staff at Rowan University.

Downloading and Unzipping

EndNote and EndNote Web are available free  to Rowan students, researchers, faculty and staff.

Go to the Rowan University Software Downloads page to download EndNote.

The latest version of EndNote is 7, so select EndNote 7 for Windows to download.  Once you authenticate using your Rowan Network ID and password SAVE the downloaded file to your computer.  The file MUST be SAVED to your computer or laptop,   DO NOT SELECT OPEN if given the option when downloading EndNote to your computer.

EndNote is downloaded as a zipped or compressed file and needs to be extracted before installing. Two files are extracted, the "ENX7Inst" file and the "License" file.  Both of these files must be located in same directory or folder for EndNote to install correctly.   IF YOU ARE ASKED TO ENTER A "PRODUCT KEY" DURING INSTALLATION BOTH FILES ARE NOT IN THE SAME FOLDER. You WILL NOT be asked to enter a "product key" if both file are in the same folder or directory.

Windows 7 Installations

  1. Right click on the "EndNote7.zip" folder.
  2. Select "Extract All" from the list of options.
  3. Click "Next" and accept the default location"
  4. Files will extract to a new folder named "EndNoteX7"
  5. Open folder EndNoteX7, and the other folder within.
  6. Click "ENX7Inst" to begin installation.
  7. Except default settings and select typical installation
  8. After EndNote installation is complete, run "EndNote Program Updates" from the EndNote Help Menu to check for any updates.  While optional it is strongly recommeded you check for and install any updates periodically.  Updates not only include bug fixes, but also changes to the publication styles that are used to properly cite references, and also to the filters used to import refererences from databases into EndNote libraries.
