Sharing Links to Library Resources

This guide explains how Rowan University course instructors can share a link to a digital book or article with students for educational purposes.

How to get a permalink to an e-book or e-journal article

Rowan University Libraries' Library Search offers an easy way to copy a link to a licensed e-book, e-journal, or article. This is the preferred method to create a stable, durable URL (web address) to a Rowan University Libraries licensed resource.

The first step is to look up the item in Library Search. From the desired result, select the item title to navigate to the item detail page like the one shown below.

  • For e-books, confirm that the book supports an unlimited number of users
  • For e-journal articles, confirm that the article is available online as part of a library subscription

Next, find the Permalink button, select it and choose Copy to Clipboard.

Finally, share the link. Note that it will only work for users with Rowan credentials (NetIDs).

Additional options for linking to e-journal articles: LibKey IO and Citation Linker

If you want to share a link to a journal or magazine article, there are additional options that may get you the article link more quickly than using Library Search.

If you have a DOI (Digital Object Identifier) or PMID (PubMed Identifier), you can quickly locate the link using LibKey IO, a search tool into which you enter an article identifier to link to Rowan University journal subscriptions.

Just type "libkey.io" into a browser, choose Rowan University, and then enter either a DOI (Digital Object Identifier) or PMID (PubMed Identifier). Or use the link below.

If you don't have an identifier but you do have a full citation, you can use the Citation Search option on the Campbell Library homepage.

After you Submit this form, you should see the Library Search detailed record just like with the e-book above. Select the Permalink, copy it to the clipboard, and paste it to your desired location.

Linking to internal content of an e-book

In some cases you may be able to create a link to a book chapter that can be embedded into courseware or a web page. It depends on the architecture of the e-book provider’s website and how it works with Rowan authentication.  Some publishers will allow you to link to a chapter, while others may not.

After logging into the e-book, go to the chapter you need and copy the web address (URL) from the web browser's address bar. Then paste it into your courseware or web page.  Test the link using multiple browsers to see if it works consistently.  There are no guarantees the link will work indefinitely so it should be checked periodically.

Some publishers offer a Share button for licensed book chapters or articles. Keep in mind that this link will only work for valid Rowan users with NetIDs.
