Library Guide to International Education

Welcome

International Education as a concept can be quite nebulous with definitions varying widely depending on perspectives or outcomes pursued.  For the Purpose of this Library Guide, the focus will be on students and their desire to obtain education in part or in whole through international educational experiences; that is by attending school in one or more countries other than one's native land, by experiencing foreign cultures, by participating in exchanges or study abroad activities, or by participating in voluntary or paid international activities during or after completion of part of their studies. Much of the information here will be of use to educators and those who participate in the dissemination of knowledge.

For some, International Education presents enhanced opportunities that might not be available to them in their home country.  For others, the experience of exploring new places and cultures and meeting new people, not simply as tourists, but engaging through shared experiences, over time may result in truly understanding other cultures, beliefs, traditions, and, hopefully, learning a second or additional language.

Whatever the purpose for pursuit of International Education the desired outcome is an experience that will broaden one's perspective and widen one's world view though cultural and regional exposure, leading to deeper intercultural and interpersonal understanding.

Through international Education, students gain a critical comprehension of global issues, enhance their life long experiences through a renewed appreciation of human diversity, and deepen their ties through an understanding of a new language. This all leads, ultimately, to richer life experiences and the contribution to a healthier, more equal, and more just world.
