African History Awards and Prizes

Martin A. Klein Prize

in African History

Melville J. Herskovits Award

given annually for the best scholarly work (including translations) on Africa published in English in the previous year and distributed in the United States. Melvin Herskovits was one of the founders of the African Studies Association

Mary Alice abd Philip Boucher Book Prize (FCHS)

Alf Andrew Heggoy Book Prize (FCHS)

 

Asian History Prizes

John K. Fairbank Prize

for an outstanding book in the history of China proper, Vietnam, Chinese Central Asia, Mongolia, Manchuria, Korea, or Japan, substantially after 1800, sponsored by American Historical Association.

Joseph Levenson Prizes

one for works whose main focus is on China before 1900 and the other for works on post-1900 China, sponsored by Association for Asian Studies

John F. Richards Prize 

for the most distinguished book on South Asian history published in English, American Historical Association

Herbert Baxter Adams Prize 

for the best book in European history from 1815 through the 20th century [AHA]

 
George Louis Beer Prize 

for the best book in European international history since 1895 [AHA]

 
Paul Birdsall Prize

for a major book on European military and strategic history since 1870 [AHA]
 

Morris D. Forkosch Prize 

for the best book in the field of British, British Imperial, or British Commonwealth history since 1485 [AHA]

Stansky Book Prize i

awarded annually by the North American Conference on British Studies for the best book published anywhere by a North American scholar on any aspect of British studies since 1800.

Roland H. Bainton Book Prize

in History/Theology from Sixteenth Century Society & Conference

Leo Gershoy Award 

for the best book in the fields of 17th- and 18th-century western European history

George L. Mosse Prize 

for the most distinguished book on the intellectual and cultural history of Europe since 1500

J. Russell Major Prize 

for the best book in English on any aspect of French history, American Historical Association

Latin American History Awards and Prizes

Friedrich Katz Prize 

for the best book in Latin American and Caribbean history, American Historical Association

Bryce Wood Book Award

for an outstanding book on Latin America in the social sciences and humanities published in English, sponsored by the Latin American Studies Association

Luciano Tomassini Latin American International Relations Book Award

for an outstanding book on Latin American foreign policies and international relations published in English, Spanish or Portuguese in any country, sponsored by the Latin American Studies Association.

Middle Eastern Studies Book Awards

Albert Hourani Book Award 

for outstanding study of the Middle East, Middle East Studies Association.

Association for Middle East Women’s Studies

Book Award for book in study of Middle East gender, women’s, and sexuality studies.

Roger Owen Book Award 

for best book in economic history, economics, and/or political economy of the Middle East, Middle East Studies Association.

Russian History Prizes

Ed A Hewett Book Prize 

is awarded annually for an outstanding monograph on the political economy of Russia, Eurasia and/or Eastern Europe.   Awarded by ASEEES


W. Bruce Lincoln Book Prize

sponsored by Mary Lincoln, is awarded biennially (in even numbered years) for an author's first published monograph or scholarly synthesis that is of exceptional merit and lasting significance for the understanding of Russia's past. 
Awarded by ASEEES. 

 

Wayne Vucinich Book Prize 

for the most important contribution to Russian, Eurasian, and East European studies in any discipline of the humanities or social sciences.  
​Awarded by ASEEES—The Association for Slavic, East European and Eurasian Studies.


Reginald Zelnik Book Prize 

in History is awarded annually for an outstanding monograph published on Russia, Eastern Europe or Eurasia in the field of history.

United States History Awards and Prizes

Albert J. Beveridge Award

For best book on the history of the United States, Latin America, or Canada, sponsored by the American Historical Association.

Avery O. Craven Award,

For the most original book on the coming of the Civil War, the Civil War years, or the Era of Reconstruction, sponsored by the Organization of American Historians.

The James A. Rawley Prize,

Best book on history of race relations in the United States, sponsored by the Organization of American Historians.

Richard P. McCormick Prize 

Outstanding scholarly book on the history of New Jersey, sponsored by the New Jersey Historical Commission.

Theodore Saloutos Memorial Book Award 

Best book on the history of immigration to the United States, sponsored by the Immigration and Ethnic History Society

Gilder Lehrman Lincoln Prize 

Best scholarly work on Abraham Lincoln, the American Civil War Soldier, or a subject relating to the era.

Littleton-Griswold Prize 

For the most distinguished book on US law and society, broadly defined

George Washington Book Prize, C.V. Starr Center for the American Experience Washington College

The George Washington Book Prize recognizes the year’s best books on the nation’s founding era, especially those that have the potential to advance broad public understanding of American history.

The Society for Historians of the Early American Republic (SHEAR) Book Prize

For the best book published on history and culture of the early American Republic, 1776-1861.  

Cox Book Prize, the Society of Cincinnati

Award for a distinguished work of American history in the era of the American Revolution published during the previous three years.

Francis Jennings First Book Manuscript Prize in Early American Ethnohistory,

Best book on the history of Indian-European relations in what is now the United States and Canada from the time of initial contacts between American Indians and Europeans through the era of the early republic United States, ca. 1800. 

Darlene Clark Hine Award

For the best book in African American women's and gender history.

John Hope Franklin Publication Prize, The American Studies Association

For the best published book in American Studies.

American Society of Church History, Grants and Awards

for the best monograph, biography, critical edition, or bibliography published in the two previous calendar years in ecumenical church history broadly conceived.

American Society of Church History

for the best book published in the two previous calendar years, originating in the North American scholarly community, which presents original research on any period in the history of Christianity, or makes a significant synthesizing scholarly contribution.

National Council on Public History

Provides a $1,000 award for the best book about or growing out of public history published within the previous two calendar years.

New York Historical Society

Society for Military History

The Distinguished Book Awards recognize the best book-length publications in English on military history, whether monograph, bibliography, guide, or other project copyrighted in the previous three calendar years. 

World History Association

Created in 1999, the World History Association Bentley Book Prize recognizes outstanding contributions to the field of world history. In 2012, the WHA Book prize was renamed in memory of Jerry H. Bentley and his significant contributions to the field of world history and the World History Association.
