These two texts are very similar but have slightly different purposes. A Manual for Writers is designed to assist students with all aspects of writing. The Chicago Manual of Style provides the same information, as well as content on publishing. The most recent version of The Chicago Manual of Style (17th ed.) has some changes not reflected in A Manual for Writers, 8th ed.
Ask your professor if they recommend using one resource over the other.
