Rights and Responsibilities in the Family Study Space

In the Family Study Space, you have the right to:

  • Let your kids play freely. The goal of the space is for you to be able to get work done while your kids have fun. We don't expect you to keep them under close supervision all the time. We've made the space as safe as possible and put safeguards on the entrances to help you feel at ease.
  • Not worry about noise. Yes, it's a library, but silence isn't necessary! This room is designated as an area where it's okay to talk at a normal volume, and we have signs around it to warn other students there may be some noise from inside. As long as you can ask your kids to keep to a reasonable volume, they're free to be themselves, and you don't need to be self-conscious!
  • Move anything anywhere. This is your space: make it work for you! The furniture is designed to be as mobile as possible, and you're welcome to move anything around in this room. Bring a chair closer to where your kids are playing, bring a favorite toy over for play beside your table, get out a stack of books to read -- no problem!
  • Connect with other caregivers. We anticipate there may be multiple families in the space at once sometimes, which is a great chance to meet people and connect! You can also use the bulletin boards here to exchange information, learn about things going on, or just leave a nice message for other families.
  • Give suggestions and feedback. We're piloting this space this year, so we'd love your feedback on what works for you and what doesn't! If you have a moment, please leave a note for us on the bulletin board, or get in touch with Ash at lierman@rowan.edu

You also have the responsibility to:

  • Stay with your kids. Although it's okay for your kids to move around the space and play without constant supervision, we do ask that you stay close by, and stay aware of their whereabouts and safety.
  • Share the space. Sometimes more than one family will likely need to use the space at a time. Please be neighborly and share the furniture, books, and toys accordingly.
  • Help keep the space ready for others to enjoy. We have a shelf of cleaning supplies available if you need to tidy up from a spill or other minor mess. For bigger messes, please let a library staff member know so we can ask the custodial staff for help!
